Artists: Wu Jingwen — Who Shapes Clay

She born in Fujian, graduated from Jingdezhen Ceramic University in 2014 with a major in Animation. From 2014 to 2015, she worked in animation production, and in 2017 she founded her own ceramic studio. Wu believes that ceramics have a life of their own life — only through careful observation and thoughtful attention can one truly engage in a dialogue with them. Her works are mostly in black tones, incorporating iron-oxide glazes that create mottled, rust-like textures. They feel solitary, yet as if quietly conversing with you; when you gaze at them, you can sense their strength. “There are thousands of factors that influence the creation of a piece — temperature, climate, humidity, time, clay, glaze… I am merely one of those factors, or perhaps simply the one who discovers it.” She also creates colorful lacquer-glazed pieces and a silver-luster series.
