Shou Ma — Recording the Everyday Relationship Between Vessels and People

Founded a woodcraft studio in 2016, Shou Ma explores natural materials and the way wood can be paired with urushi (natural lacquer). Through objects made for contemporary daily life, he hopes to create a quiet connection between people, objects, and nature. His works are crafted with materials such as wood, urushi, silver leaf, paper, and tile ash. Each piece is shaped by hand, layered with natural lacquer, and polished repeatedly to build depth and softly blended tones—making every work one of a kind. Designed for everyday use, lacquerware is durable and resilient, and will gradually develop a beautiful patina over time, leaving the traces of years.
